Sawmill

This location was produced in collaboration with the MAD cartographer who made a few awesome maps to go alongside my scene. This month they made a group of maps under the theme "crooked", and this potentially abandoned sawmill was one of the maps that struck my fancy. I have made a few different shop, or worksite locations before, and I think the Logging Camp scene that I m...

Tinkerers Tower

I was lucky again to collaborate this week with The Reclusive Cartographer on this very cool tower scene. His theme this month was Artisans and Workshops and I chose to collaborate on this artificer inspired tower and workshop. He has made an awesome, 7 level map for this tower, so there's a lot to explore!

A repurposed keep in the middle of small town, Tinkerer's Tower is quite literally a buzz with the sounds of industry as the reclusive Art...

New Patreon Tiers Launching August 1st

James’rpgart post New Patreon Tiers Launching August 1st from patreon

Hey everyone!

Firstly, thank you for all the amazing support you have given to James' RPG Art over the years. I hope this message finds you well and full of creative inspiration for your next game!

I have been making artwork for James' RPG Art for over 6 years now and in that time have made a catalogue of hundreds of animated scenes. I started this journey because I always found that just using a map for D&D always felt a bit lacking and I wanted to find a way to add some immersion into my games. After making scenes for my o...

Desert Oasis

After the Desert City and Desert Ruins locations recently, and realizing that my catalogue is fairly light on desert locations, I came up with a few more, and this oasis had to be the first on the list. I think a desert oasis location is a must have for any party travelling through a desert terrain. I think like my campsite scenes, locations like this one give the party an opport...

Coastal Inn

This weeks scene was inspired by a recent trip I took to a very similar place to this. I was very inspired by the scenery of the area and I knew that I just had to paint a location like the one that I stayed. I get quite a lot of requests for more inns or tavern interiors as this is always a reoccurring location in just about any fantasy RPG, so I thought this was a great opportunity to fulfill some of those wishes. Hopefully this is another one of those locations where your party can find some rest and downtime, and then have that rest dist...

Desert Ruins - Still Image

James’rpgart post Desert Ruins - Still Image from patreon

After painting the Desert City scene the other week, I realised that I haven't made a huge amount of desert locations, so I wanted to show the biome a bit more love. Ruins are always a location that a party needs to explore, whether its the entrance to a dungeon, the lair of a monster or just where a group of bandits have made their camp. I want to fill in some of these areas like desert locations that I haven't explored that much, so what other desert location...

James’rpgart post Flying Castle - Still Image from patreon

This is another awesome collaboration with both the Reclusive Cartographer and Critical Crafting. The Reclusive Cartographer's theme this month was castles, and he came up with this idea of a flying castle, which I thought was the most original, and because I have made some scenes of flying locations recently I thought it would fit in well with those locations. Specific...

James’rpgart post Desert City - Still Image from patreon

I have been watching season 4 of the solo actual play show Me, Myself and Die recently, and the main city so far is an Arabian inspired desert city, full of tall, painted sandstone buildings. I haven't made a huge amount of desert locations, and so I was inspired to make a cityscape that could hopefully be a stand in for about any metropolis in a desert setting. I know desert settings don't get a huge amount of love, so hopefully watching this new s...

James’rpgart post Halfling Village - Still Image from patreon

I had the great opportunity to work again with The Griffons Saddlebag on this location. If you don't know them, they make a new magic item every day, but in addition, they create adventure settings every month, and this month is The Wending Wold, a Halfling Village that has been sequestered within a demiplane. I had a lot of fun making this location, as it is coming to the time of year where gardens are in full bloom and the sound of bees is in the ai...

I had someone suggest a fungal forest to me on the discord page. I loved the alliteration of fungal forest, and they mentioned the colour purple, so I thought it was a cool idea to do. I have also loved the idea of the circle of spores druid class from D&D, and little mushroom creatures I think are always a very fun group of npc's, so a location like this has a lot of possibilities for interesting encounters!

Let me know what you think of this one and what kinds of plot hooks you would use this location for.
