Elle Fanningโs performance (particularly the scene where her character is able to cry on cue in the movie-within-a movie) low key points out, not just how gifted she is as an actress, but also how talented ALL these kids areโฆShe is playing a character who has to have a natural gift of acting, but is almost blasรฉ about it. Which also points out that the young actor playing her scene partner has the (arguably even more daunting of a task) of playing a kid who is about as talented of an actor as you would expect an amateur kid with a blossoming interest in acting would have. So, essentially, he has to convincingly play a kid who is earnest but noticeably poor at acting, while not forgoing the illusion that he himself is an actor playing a character plying another characterโฆItโs very meta, and an enormously challenging feat for even an adult actor to pull off (RDJ in Tropic Thunder comes to mind as a successful example) and all of these kids pull it off seamlessly, without ever distracting you or pulling you out of the film. Itโs a real thankless job to be a child actor that more often than not ends in a maladjusted development into adult life, but every single one of these kids here killed it.
