To celebrate International Women's Day we are resharing Q & As from our archives with two of Deep Look’s talented producers, Gabriela Quirós and Rosa Tuirán, who grew up in Costa Rica and Mexico respectively. We’re also highlighting a few of the episodes they’ve worked on.

Gabriela has been producing stories for Deep Look since the series’ inception in 2014. She’s particularly interested in animals that suck our blood. In fact, she’s offered up her skin to be bitten on many occasions for a Deep Look story. Her episode “How Mosquitoes Use Six Needles to Suck our Blood” has over 23 million views and is our most popular episode.

She is also super interested in bees! Her most popular bee episode, at over 7.5 million views, is about how honeybees make honey and “bread.” Her most recent bee-related episode was about varroa mites, ghastly honeybee parasites.

Rosa joined the Deep Look team more recently, in the spring of 2023, and is especially interested in stories about the underwater world… she is an avid scuba diver! You might have seen her first video for Deep Look about the alkali flies that thrive in California’s Mono Lake. Or her more recent episode about how corals synchronize their spawning with the night sky. She also produced a stunningly cute episode about fuzzy and tenacious acorn weevils.
