Heaven's Laws - Lifestone - Chapter 27
Added 2022-11-17 13:11:05 +0000 UTCSya continued squeezing them both for a long moment. She stepped back and took them in. Her gaze landed on Chao and he saw what remained of the womanâs icy demeanor melt.
âSon-in-law, this one is pleased to see you in good health. Are there any lingering side effects from the poison, or have you completely recovered?â
He bowed deeply to her. âThis one is pleased to see you, Mother Sya. I have fully recovered thanks to our Huifen.â
âGood,â she said, looking at him for a moment longer before sidestepping to address her daughter.
He shouldâve expected what happened next. Father Tu appeared as soon as she had moved over and grabbed Chao by both shoulders and started shaking him. âMy boy, weâre happy youâre in good health. Of all the peopleâŚâ
âHusband,â Sya warned out of the side of her mouth, motioning toward the girl that was with them.
The man just nodded and gave him a double handed pat. âNow youâre here and the treasure hunting can begin.â
He cuffed his father-in-law on the shoulder. âYouâre telling me you havenât started without us?â
The man grinned from ear to ear. âI didnât say that.â
He then noticed that Pangfua and Genji hadnât stayed put. As soon as Father Tu had stepped back a little, a full-grown Genji slipped through and hugged him around the waist. He was taken aback. They had some friendship, but he wouldnât say theyâd ever been close. Hugging wasnât exactly commonplace amongst friends either. Not even amongst family. Father Tu had always been different, and he could see Mother Sya having the inclination because of her connection to him even if she rarely showed it, but this? Then he realized he didnât actually know where she was from or what her background was. Only that she was the Sage Pangfuaâs disciple. And was sixteen now.
âIâm happy that youâre okay, Big Brother Chao.â
He copied Tuâs grin and replied. âThank you, Genji.â He wasnât sure how intimately to address her, so he went with something neutral. âYou look all grown up. Did you do something with your hair?â
She stepped back shyly. Instead of the bob on the top of her head, her dark hair was straight and lay just past her shoulders. âYou noticed.â She didnât let the smiled reach her mouth. âI did.â
âIt looks nice. Mature.â
Then he saw something that was even rare for his Huifenâan icy blush. âThank you, Big Brother Chao.â
âHusband is right,â Huifen said, joining them. âYou look lovely, Little Sister.â
She then hugged Huifen as well.
He glanced at Pangfua to see her watching the girl closely. Their eyes met and he saw their meaning. She was the girlâs master, but Genji was no longer a girl at all. If she was outside the Ice Phoenix Sect, there would already be talk of marriage for her. More than that, she was nothing like the ice fairies the Ice Phoenix Sect traditionally produced. The Sage was coming to terms with it. This was a whole new era for the Ice Phoenix Sect and Pangfua would ultimately be the one to lead it to a new golden age.
âBrother Chao,â Pangfua said, motioning for him to take her hand. âMay I?â
He didnât hesitate.
She took it and began to scan him. When she opened her eyes, she gave a satisfied nod. âThereâs no trace left of the poison.â She cupped his hand with both of hers. âThatâs a relief. As you can see, weâre overjoyed that youâve made it here safely.â
âThank you, Sage Pangfua.â
âNone of that, Sage Long Chao,â she replied, narrowing her eyes. âHaving you and Sage Huifen here will allow me to rest easy.â
âThereâs a threat?â He asked, matching his demeanor with hers.
âThere is, but we will speak of it later.â Her eyes moved to the girl half hiding behind him. âYouâve brought a guest.â
âYes.â Huifen said, grabbing the girlâs hand and presenting her. âThis is Duan Yu-yan.â
The girl that had been as warm as a lap cat to Divine Cultivator Billi was now glancing around timidly like she was amongst a den of hungry beasts.
âLittle Yu-yan, I have heard of your parentâs deeds before their death,â Pangfua lamented, but then a dazzling smile, one Chao had only seen once or twice, shone down on their little friend. âItâs an honor to have you here.â
The girl had gone from not speaking to chatty, only to revert back in the sageâs presence. âYes,â was all she said.
Huifen squeezed her hand to encourage more, but Pangfua shook her head as if to say itâs unnecessary.
âI donât think Iâm the cause of her distress. Am I, Little Yu-yan?â Pangfua asked.
He watched the girlâs eyes dart from Huifen to him. She built up courage then pulled on his wifeâs hand. When she drew closer, the girl asked at barely a whisper. âYouâre a sage?â
Heâd already concluded the girl didnât have a good grasp of the different realms, but it seemed she had some idea what a sage really was.
âYes,â Huifen replied. âMy husband and I have been hiding our real identities for convenience and to accommodate Senior Billi. But also for our own safety. It doesnât change anything, though.â
Chao took that opportunity to mess the girlâs hair. âItâs all true. And youâre still cuter like this.â
âBig Brother Chao,â Genji said with a glare. She stepped forward from where sheâd been standing off to the side, bend down, and began to run he fingers through the girlâs hair to fix it. âYou have nothing to fear. As you can see, even though Brother Chao is usually quite solemn, he also has a silly streak. Shall we call him the Silly Sage?â
Yu-yan cracked a wide grin.
He didnât mind that she saw him as silly, for he saw himself as easygoing and prone to make things fun. But to be seen as usually be solemn⌠How could that be? Then he remembered Genji mainly knew him from his time in the Frigid Moon Mystical Realm. Heâd spent most of his time there taking care of Huifen. Once sheâd recovered, they had a number of peaceful days, but almost as soon as they were married, heâd turned his efforts to figuring out how to protect her. Father Zan had been there to accommodate him, and ultimately, heâd taken him to the Training Construct. Those had been dark demanding days. Of course, she saw him as solemn. At least, she knew him well enough to know he wouldnât take offense. On the contrary.
âI like it,â Chao replied with a snicker.
The girl looked relieved but was still hesitant to look him in the eye as she asked. âSo youâll still come visit me?â
âOf course,â Huifen said, beating him to it and running her fingers through the girlâs hair as well. âSages can have friends too you know. So can divine realm cultivators like Senior Billi.â
âThat meansâŚâ Realization struck the girl. âBig Sister Billi is stronger than a sage?â
âMuch stronger,â Pangfua said. Her anxiety was enough for Chao to notice it. âGenji, can you take our new friend to the side chamber and get her sorted. I think some food and rest is called for.â
As if to declare it true, Yu-yan yawned.
Taking her by the hand, Genji led her away.
âIf you would please, Brother Chao.â
In answer to Pangfuaâs request, he surrounded them with a sound barrier as soon as the two younger girls were out of the room.
âYou were traveling with the Blood Cultivator?â She asked as soon as it was up.
âYes,â Huifen said. âHer contribution to capturing my husbandâs would be assassin was reported to you?â
âIt was. I just didnât expect her to stay with you.â
She relayed a brief telling of how sheâd mostly join them for meals and only stayed after Yu-yan had joined them. âI canât say Iâm confident sheâs not dangerous, but sheâs not bloodthirst like I first believed. She showed incredible restraint in her handling of Ping. It was like she was confused and fearful of acting.â
âI agree,â Chao said. âAnd even though she undoubtedly has killed female cultivators in the past, I doubt sheâll be any threat to the woman of the joint sect. She took to Yu-yan almost immediately, and almost all of her conversations were with Huifen.â
âYou speak as if she is planning to join the sect,â Pangfua said.
âI think sheâs an unofficial member of the Divine Fire Sect already. From what I could glean from my father, he and Elder Law saved her and her sisters from slavery to a divine realm family. Sheâs sworn an oath of loyalty to him. Also, she promised sheâd visit Yu-yan when she returned with Father and Mother Quinyuan from their journey.â
When he felt Pangfua begin to circulate her qi, he knew she was using heart of ice. The sage had come a long way from using it unceasingly, but she hadnât embraced it like Genji, or even Quinyuan. âSheâd have to have an unimaginable amount of self-control to survive what she has, but now that her shackles have been removed, who can tell if her control will remain. This is beyond my experience to handle. Senior Zan will be returning with her, at least.â
âSister,â Huifen said, concern heavy in her voice. âYou mentioned thereâs a threat. What are we facing and how can we help?â
âWe will take our leave,â Mother Sya said suddenly. âI need to get back.â
âThank you, Sister,â Pangfua replied. âBrother Tu.â
It was soon just the three of them. She no longer held anything back. âThe threat is different from the one you faced with the Aureate Empire. Itâs not direct and thereâs no clear military to face. The enemy could be any or all the sects in the Divine Spire. Weâve only been here for two days, and already there have been four incidents. Itâs not just bullying, either. Thatâs to be expected. These were attempted murders. One of which succeeded, and another will never be able to cultivate again.â
He felt his wifeâs qi churn as her anger built with it. She responded. âDonât they realize their putting us in a position where we might banish everyone to keep our disciples safe and the spire for ourselves?â
âThat might be exactly what theyâre thinking.â
âThey want to join the sects against us?â
âPerhaps, or they might just want to use that possibility as a deterrent. You likely didnât notice because he has a knack for keeping his cultivation hidden, but Elder Harnish of the Morning Midst Village is an overlord. Forcing them out wouldnât be easy on my own.â
âIf you want our help, just give the word,â Chao responded.
âThank you, Little Brother, but if we took such actions then finding the culprit would be near impossible. Also our joint sect isnât the only one that has been attacked. We can keep our people safe by keeping them in groups. Attacking them then would cause too big of a commotion.â
âYou want to use us as bait, then?â
âNo, but if you could mingle with the disciples of the other sects and gather information it would be helpful. The only reason thereâs been so many attacks is because the first looked like a simple case of bullying taken too far and the other three happened so close together. One of my duties is to make sure your cultivation isnât hindered while youâre here, so Iâll use you sparingly.â
âWhy?â He said with a smirk. âWhat are the cultivations of the disciples attacked? Are they in the sky and overlord realms?â
âNo, but you did just get done being poisonedâalmost losing your life. Itâs an unnecessary risk.â
âUnnecessary, but practical. It might also be the best method.â
âThe primary assistance you can provide me is to be there in case something happens. If we need to take more drastic measures or the threat worsens, I know I can call on you.â
Huifen stepped past Chao and gave Pangfua a martial salute. âYou have our full support.â
âThank you. And thank you, Brother Chao. Iâve never doubted your willingness to help, but this isnât your responsibility, itâs mine. You have my word Iâll call if I need you. Just having the option makes things much easier for me.â
