Chapter 622: Three Eyes to Find
Added 2023-07-04 20:36:36 +0000 UTCInterrogations were useless with obstinate creatures like the ones Professor Jules had in her lab. They would neither bend, yield, nor crack, so sheâd taken a different tack, locking herself in her lab with her assistants, the single-minded Ravener-spawn, and leaving strict orders for everyone else to keep out. According to the Watcher team standing guardâthe sounds coming through the sealed doors were the stuff of nightmares.
Whether day or night, howls, explosions, long drawn out shrieking and worse, emanated from Professor Jules laboratory.
Soon, one assistant emerged, looking stunned and grey.
Then another.
And another.
Until only the most hardened remained.
Alexâs only wish was to be there with them.
But, she had stopped him.
âListen,â Jules had said. âEach one of us is needed where we can be most useful. Iâm most useful with alchemy, but you can do much more. Go and find her. Iâll crack these monsters from here.â
And so Alex had been tasked with searching for clues day and night, though heâd found nothing.
But, one good thing that did come from scouring the realm for Carey, was how much heâd improved with the Travellerâs power in the past weeks. Now, he could jump longer distances with ease.
When heâd first discovered how the power worked, he could barely move ten feet. Even during the tournament, he only made jumps of a few hundred feet.
But now, after days of teleporting from place to place hunting for Carey and Merzhin, he could teleport himself and anyone he touched over two miles at a time, and the distances were increasing.
âIf only I had somewhere to go,â he thought, watching his summons search the land. âIf only I had more clues to work withâŠandâŠwhy do I have this damn creepy feeling all the time!â
Alex spun in mid-air, eyeing the landscape, finding nothing but greenery and rock down below him.
Heâd been feeling like he was being watched since theyâd trapped the Ravener-spawn for Professor Jules. Every time they went out to the wilderness, that uneasy feeling trailed him, like piercing eyes were tracking his every move.
Yet no one, not even his mass of summoned monsters, could find anything or anyone lurking around.
It was enough to make him wonder if he was going slightly mad.
âJust keep focused,â Alex thought. âDonât let your mind conjure phantoms. Andââ
The far-speaker suddenly crackled in his satchel.
âMr. Roth! Come back to the lab!â Professor Jules sounded elated. âIâve done it! Five dead specimens later, but Iâve done it!â
âWhat?â he cried, fishing the far-speaker from his bag. âDone what, professor, done what? Did you find Carey?â
âNo, but now we have a way forward!â she cried, he could hear the smile in her voice. âI isolated internal organs that the creatures use to track anyone who made a connection with a living dungeon core; I took the monsters apart and modified the tracking organs so we could take control and use them to find Carey. So, come back at once, we have testing to do!â
âBy the Traveller!â he shouted. âProfessor, I could kiss you! Iâll get the others and weâll head to a fae gate. We should be back at the Castle in under an hour!â
âHurry!â her voice called.
The far-speaker went silent.
âAlright, hold on, Carey. Weâre coming. I feel sorry for whoever took you,â he said, his voice gruff with anger. âNo, actually, I donât, I donât feel sorry for them at all.â
With that, he closed his eyes.
And vanished.
Far below, the eyes that were watching him blinked.
A blue hand ran stubby fingers through a snow white beard.
Bells tinkled.
And the fae some called the Stalker pondered aloud. âHe is a determined hunter, and one who is still growing. TrueâŠhe has power that can let him escape; but the chase will be more interesting. He has magic to fight back; the chase will be more thrilling. He has a mind to plot and plan; the chase will be more challenging. YesâŠhe will definitely make good prey.â
Bells jingled on his mountâs antlers.
âBut, I will need new hounds,â he said mournfully. âAnd I must also petition my lord. The latter will be no troubleâŠbut the former? My last hounds are long mouldering. Hmmm, ohâŠoh!â
He grinned, revealing sharp teeth. âYes, yes that would be delightfully ironic! This will be your test, my prey: if you survive, you will make hounds for me. If you do not? Well then you will have proven yourself to be unworthy quarry, anyway. Yes, this is good. Soon, I will have a new trophy to show off at the lodge.â
The fae moved back into the fae roads, licking his lips.
He rode toward an escarpment.
One that most mortalkind in these lands had long forgotten.
But the Stalker had a feeling it would not be forgotten for much longer.
###
In the war room, a tense group was gathered.
Alex and his cabal were there, huddled with Claygon, Tyris, Brutus, Theresa, Grimloch, Svenia, Hogarth, Watcher Hill, and the Heroes of Thameland. Vesuvius was waiting in the courtyard
And then there was Professor Jules.
She looked like sheâd aged a dozen years in half as many days. Dark circles ringed her eyes. Her white hair was wild, her robes dishevelled, but a look of triumph burned in her eyes as she stared at a device.
On the map table, a tankard-sized crystal jar ribbed in steel, with runes of blood magic running up the sides, lay upon it. Within the jar, three eyes suspended in a thick clear were floating.
One of the eyes watched Drestra and another Alex, black pupils bore into them. The third bobbed listlessly in the jar of mana-infused water and viscera, swivelling in different directions. Behind each eye, sinewy cords of flesh connected to a pulsating, erratically shaped knot of organs. They throbbed in time with each other like hearts beating as one.
âWhat in every hell is that? It looks gross.â Thundar said.
âMy thoughts exactly,â Hart muttered.
âThis device is going to help us find Carey, judging from the way two of those eyes are fixed on Drestra and Alex,â Jules said confidently. âThrough a great deal of trial and error, I found the tracking organs deep in the Ravener-spawn you captured, and linked them together in a suspension powered by blood magic. The Eye-Finder is what Iâve called it. Perhaps itâs not the best name, but I wonât quibble about that now. Naming it isnât important. What matters is that this device could be our key. I attuned an eye to the individual who controlled a dungeon core in the past, using remains each one handled.â
âWhatâs the range on it?â Alex asked.
âIâm not sure,â she said. âWe were able to amplify the organsâ natural capacity for detection, so they should have a longer range than they did in their original hosts. But, I donât quite understand how the detection worksâŠit seems to send out some sort of ping, like a bat would using echolocation, butââ She shook her head. âIt doesnât really matter. Whatâs most important for our purposes is that you can use it to find Carey.â
âGood. Thank the Traveller,â Theresa sounded anxious. âWe should get going and try it out. We've already lost days.â
âAye,â Cedric said. âI doubt thingsâre gonna be gettinâ any safer for Merzhin anâ Carey, so letâs do itâŠbut where dâwe start? The thing sniffs out Carey like a bloodhound, right? So whereâre we gonna start? Finneganâs Crags?â
âThatâs our only lead at this point,â Alex said. âCarey and Merzhin disappeared from there and we found monsters coming to Greymoor from that direction. Letâs start there and hope this thing has the rangeâŠit might be our last hope.â
âIt will work,â Professor Jules said. âIt has to.â She took a deep trembling breath. âCareyâs parents have been informed that sheâs disappeared and theyâre making their way from the Rhinean empire to Generasi. We want her back safely for them, for her, and for us.â
âThen letâs go find out if this works,â Alex said, the mood in the room was sombre. âOkay, everyone, come with me. Weâre heading to Finneganâs Crags. Hopefully, we'll have Carey and Merzhin back home by morning.â
At this, Prince Khalik gave Alex a look, but said nothing.
###
âPlease work,â Tyris said as the group stepped through the fae gate. âIt has to work.â
âIt will,â Isolde said. âThere are few alchemists in the world who can equal Professor Julesâ abilities. It will work.â
âWell, weâre about to find out,â Alex said, keeping his eye on the jar.
So far, thereâd been no response from the third eye.
âIâm going to teleport to the spot Carey disappeared from. You all stay put. Iâll come get you if I find anything,â Alex said.
âUm, might I come with you?â Khalik asked. âNajyah might see something we missed earlier.â
He shot Alex a meaningful look.
The Thameish wizard nodded. âAlright,â he said, looking at the others. âWeâll be right back.â
âBe safeâŠfatherâŠâ Claygon said.
âWe will.â Alex touched Khalik and Najyahâperched on her masterâs shoulderâand the three of them disappeared.
A couple of jumps brought them to where Carey was last seen.
âCome on.â Alex held the Eye-Finder. âCome onâŠâ
âAlex, there is something we must speak of,â Khalik said, looking at his close friend with concern.
âYeah, I had a feeling you wanted to talk about something.â Alex waved the jar around. The first eye pointed at him, the second toward where theyâd left Drestra, and the third still bobbed listlessly in the liquid. He bit down on rising agitation. âWhatâs going on?â
âListen, once we locate Carey,â the prince said. âIf you wish, the rest of us can rescue her while you return to the Castle. Iâm sure you have thought of this butâŠif we find Carey, we will likely find Merzhin. And if we find Merzhinââ
âHis symbolâs going to start singing,â Alex said. âAnd then my secret comes out, right?â
He continued waving the jar around, his frown deepening.
âExactly,â Khalik said. âBut, by now, you have no doubt realised this.â
âYeah,â Alex said. âI have, butâŠlook. Iâm not just going to let you guys run into what might be the biggest nest of Ravener-spawn that weâve ever come up against, or some order of kidnapping, murderous priests whoâve been hiding Uldarâs secrets for Traveller-knows how many thousands of years, without me.â
âDo not fear for us,â Khalik said. âWe can handle ourselves.â
âYou can, but Iâm the only one who can teleport,â Alex said. âAnd finding another wizard to teleport all of you is going to take time, and thatâs something we donât have. Plus, we fight better together. If anything goes wrong, I can get you guys out of danger. I can grab Carey and Merzhin and teleport us away in a secondâŠthereâs lots of ways I can be useful.â
âI knowâŠand that is true.â Khalikâs eyes dropped. âYou do know this will mean that at the very least, Merzhin will know your secret.â
âAt this point? Weâve obviously drawn the attention of someone powerful.â Alexâs irritation grew. Still no response from the third eye. âPeople might be coming for us anyway. And let me tell you? The mood Iâm in? If some priest tells me Iâve got to come back and help Thameland in the way they want me to? Iâll tell them exactly which hell they can go to. Weâve been to a few. Thereâs lots of options.â
âWhat if they try to take you?â Khalik asked. âNot that we would let them just do so.â
âThanks man, but I donât know if Generasi will simply hand me over,â Alex said. âThereâs a few contracts that Shaleâs been working on thatâŠletâs say the cityâs ruling council would be pretty upset if the guy who can actually make advanced golems is taken captive by another realm. And if they try to force the issue? At this point, Khalik? If Baelin was here, Iâd be up for fighting Uldar himself. Iâm tired of all of this. So, if Merzhin demands that I go along and do Uldarâs bidding after Iâve rescued his ass? I donât care what the Mark does. Iâll find some way to punch hiâOh for Travellerâs sake!â
âWhat is it?â Khalik asked.
âThereâs no response from this damn thing!â Alex floated higher, waving the jar like a madman. He glided around the campsiteâfrom where Carey and Merzhin had disappearedâin wider and wider circles.
âCome on, this has to work!â he snapped. âProfessor Jules is a damned good alchemist. Youâre telling me she canât reverse engineer something some shitty Ravener-spawn can do? Donât make me laugh!â
He resisted the urge to shake the jar in case it flew from his hands.
âWork!â he shouted at the device. âJust worâOh, by the Traveller. By the Traveller!â
Alex stopped dead, floating a few dozen feet over a copse of trees on a bluff above the abandoned campsite.
Inside the jarâŠ
âŠthe third eye had suddenly snapped into focus, pointing southeast.
âKhalik!â Alex cried. âKhalik, we found her! We finally have her trail!â

2023-07-05 03:41:04 +0000 UTCthe principal didn't strike the deal... that's the pivot point for the Fae. Even the fae have rules. though it well leaves open who is predator and who is prey. Vs this one- murder santa's head might adorn a wall soon too

2023-07-05 03:12:25 +0000 UTCWill Alex defeat murder Santa and as punisment have him to deliver gifts to children for the next thousand years?đ

2023-07-05 02:46:38 +0000 UTCBut the fae can have multiple roles/faces/names so in his roll/name of the guide he has be perfectly helpful but this name is not part of the deal, and if he does it when Alex isn't actively helping the other heroes he's not interfering with the heroes allies technically, and fae love nothing more than technicalities, also he doesn't know he is a hero

2023-07-05 01:34:30 +0000 UTCI thought murder Santa was on their side? Like heâs a horrible ally who doesnât help at all, but this is being actively antagonistic which seems kinda counter to the deal they struck with the Fae

2023-07-04 21:23:14 +0000 UTCWell, the Fae do seem to have a jolly good time whenever The Ravener comes out of its hidey-hole. It has been a while, but I think the fair folk named the times when the Ravener is active the "Time of Plenty", or something along those lines. It would not surprise me at all if some of the higher ranking Fae are in on the conspiracy surrounding Uldar and The Ravener. They have a vested interest in seeing the country of Thameland shaken up every hundred years or so--it keeps the human population from getting too powerful or settled in. Alternatively, the murder Santa is just a psychopath looking for a challenge. He is a Fae known as The Stalker, after all.

2023-07-04 21:15:42 +0000 UTCCan anyone explain why the murder Santa wants to hunt Alex? They met only once and he wasn't as impressive as he is now but it feels like Alex was being observed for weeks.
