âSome say mirrors are just windows to other realities, and thatâs why we see the world from a different perspective in them. Those people truly have no idea how close they are to the truth; mirrors arenât just windows, but theyâre doorways to alternate realities.â
âEvery reality vibrates at a different frequency, but sometimes those frequencies can shift slightly, causing two different realities to come closer together. That doesnât cause any harm to either reality, but it does cause a phenomenon called Mirror Shifting to become possible.â
âWhen Mirror Shifting occurs, some mirrors scattered through the worlds become portals, and when touched, they can suck the person inside them, sending them to an alternate reality, where almost nothing could be different, or everything could be different.â
âNow, while realities often get close enough to allow Mirror Shifting to happen, you have better odds of suddenly having all the blood in your body turn into helium. So there are almost no records or accurate data on the subject. Still, just because the odds are low doesnât mean it canât happen.â
Marcel was sitting at his computer playing one of his favorite shooters, having a great time when suddenly someone knocked on his door. âHey Marcel, sorry to bother you, but could you take out the trash before the rain starts?â His mother asked through the door.
âHuh? Oh yeah, I can do that.â Marcel said as he removed his headset and got up. He opened his door to see his mother walking back downstairs. He followed her to the kitchen and grabbed the trash bag and pulled it out.
âThank you, sweety. Oh, and dinner is already made and in the fridge. Iâll be going out tonight, so donât wait up, and donât play too much of that game.â His mother said as she grabbed a new trash bag. âThanks mom, and donât worry, I wonât play much longer. I hope you enjoy your night.â
Marcel said as he turned around and brought the trash to the front door. He walked the bag of trash down the driveway to where they kept the trash barrel. He opened the lid and tossed the trash in, and a second afterward it started to downpour.
âDamn, the rain came in quick, and itâs coming down hard. I should get back inside before I catch a cold.â Marcel said as he put his hands above his head and started running. As he made it to the door, his mother was stepping out with an umbrella.
She smiled at him and shook her head. âMake sure you get those wet clothes off; you donât want to catch a cold.â Marcel let out a laugh. âDonât worry about me mom, I know. You go have fun; Iâll be fine.â
Her smile widened even more and then she nodded, turning around and heading towards her car. Marcel turned around as well and headed all the way back to his room to toss his wet clothes into the laundry hamper.
After he got a pair of pajamas on, he saw something move on the side of him. He turned to look and didnât see anything at first, but after a few seconds he finally noticed what was moving; it was people, and they were in his mirror.
âWhat the heck is going on? How⊠How can I see people moving in my mirror?â Marcel said as he got closer. As he got closer, he saw a very cute girl with pink hair in twin tails on her knees crying while she held her face.
Next to her, standing above her and looking down at her with a look of disgust on her face, was some much older blonde-haired woman. âWho are they? And why does this give me a bad feeling?â Marcel said as he continued to watch.
Suddenly, without warning, the black-haired woman kicked the pink-haired girl, knocking her over. âHEY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING???â Marcel yelled as he touched the mirror, furious at what he just saw.
Suddenly Marcel felt himself pulled through the mirror and flung into the other reality in which he had been viewing. Once he was in the new reality, he was flung right into something, and a moment later Marcel felt a ton of pain.
âWhat⊠just happened⊠my stomach⊠hurtsâŠâ Marcel said as she held her stomach. âHey, you little bitch, I bet it does. Serves you right.â Marcel was shocked to hear a woman's voice and turned her head to find the black-haired woman she saw in the mirror.
âHow⊠how did you get in front of me?â Marcel asked, extremely confused about what was going on and why she was in pain. âShut up you spoiled brat,â the woman said as she kicked Marcel again. âI donât care if youâre eighteen; you live in my house, so you follow my rules.â
âNo speaking ever.â The woman said as she kicked Marcel again and again, causing her more and more pain. âWhy⊠Why are you beating me? Who⊠who even are you?â Marcel tried to say, but the woman was too busy kicking her to hear.
âSheâs⊠sheâs my stepmotherâŠâ A feminine voice said inside Marcelâs head. âWait⊠that voice is different. Who⊠who are you, and where are you?â Marcel said quietly. âWell, Iâm Marceline, and I think you sort of took over my body.â Marceline said, sounding scared.
âI⊠I took over your⊠body?â Marcel said as she managed to open her eyes again and looked down at herself. Sure enough, she was in the body of a woman. She was wearing a super cute blue dress and had the body to fill it out well.
âHow⊠How did this happen?â Marcel asked as the black-haired woman continued to kick her. âI⊠I donât know⊠I was on the ground in pain, then suddenly I felt like I was hit by something, and thatâs when you took over⊠Other than that I know nothingâŠâ Marceline said worriedly.
Before Marcel could respond further, the kicking stopped and Marcelineâs stepmother stopped kicking her. âAlright, I think youâve had your fill for tonight. Once you dry those tears, go downstairs and clean the kitchen; itâs a complete mess.â She said before turning and walking off.
Marcel sat there sniffing and waiting for the pain to stop. Once it died down a bit, she was able to sit up and look down at her hands. âI canât believe Iâm a girl⊠but more than that, I canât believe your stepmother treats you like that⊠Whatâs the deal with that?â
âOh, it was my fault⊠I forgot to take the trash out when she asked⊠I got distracted by pretty flowers outside.â Marceline said, panicked. âExcuse my language, but what the fuck are you talking about? Thereâs no way forgetting to take the trash out makes it okay to beat you.â Marcel said furiously.
âYou did nothing wrong, and itâs clear youâre being abusedâŠâ Marcel said, letting his tone get softer. âI⊠Sheâs not really that badâŠâ Marceline muttered. âOh yeah? Tell me, how often do these beatings happen?â Marcel asked, already having an inkling of the answer.
Marceline got quiet for a moment. âEvery day⊠sometimes more than onceâŠâ Marcel shook her head. âYeah, thatâs not right. My mother has never once laid a hand on me. Speaking of, if you have a stepmother, does that meanâŠ?â
âYeah⊠My mother, Magret, passed away when I was little. My father, Herald, married my stepmother, Jeriko, last year, completely out of the blue as well⊠Ever since then sheâs been living here.â Marceline said, sounding quite upset.
âMagret and Herald⊠those⊠Those are my parentsâ names as well⊠My father, Herald, was the one who passed away when I was little. Ever since then itâs been just me and my mother, but itâs been nice; she takes great care of me and loves meâŠâ
Marcel said as she stood up. âYour stepmother is clearly evil, so I understand why she does that, but what about your father? Why does he let her treat you that way?â âWell⊠because he doesnât know⊠She doesnât treat me like that when heâs around, and I havenât told him.â
Marceline said, sounding a bit ashamed of herself. âWhy?â Marcel asked as she walked up to the mirror. âWell⊠I guess because heâs so busy and never home, and I didnât want to take away his happiness that he gets when heâs with JerikoâŠâ
Marcelâs heart suddenly felt like it was ripped in two. âI⊠I see⊠Youâre a very kind person⊠But, whatâs happening to you needs to stop⊠Itâs not right, nor is it good for your physical or mental health.â
âI⊠I know⊠I just canât bring myself⊠Jeriko has told me if I did, my father would be single and unhappy. Plus⊠Iâm really afraid of herâŠâ Marceline said in a shaky tone. âI see⊠I believe he may end up single again, but heâll be happier knowing youâre safe.â
Marcel lifted her hand and placed it on the mirror, but nothing happened, nor could she see through it to her reality. âWell, I think Iâm stuck here⊠at least for now⊠And since Iâm the one piloting this body⊠I say we do something about that stepmother of yours. What do you say?â
Marceline got quiet again. âI guess⊠No⊠Youâre right⊠Letâs do it⊠and by that I mean you⊠Iâm still way too afraid to do it myself⊠plus I canât move our body currentlyâŠâ Marcel let out an awkward laugh.
âYeah, sorry about that. Wasnât my plan to end up in another world and steal your female body.â âFemale? Wait, youâre a boy!!! Thatâs so gross, but I guess itâs not your fault⊠Oh, by the way, whatâs your name?â Marceline asked curiously.
âOh, itâs MarcelâŠâ Marcel said with a bit of an awkward laugh. The two of them realized they must be the same person from different realities. âWell, thatâs interesting, another me⊠well, other me⊠Marcel, thank you⊠more than anything, I think I needed someone I could talk to about all of this.â
