Good afternoon Patrons, Dōgen here.
I wanted to let everyone know that while I had originally planned on releasing Japanese Phonetics Episode 68 later today, yesterday while checking the final edit file, I noticed a discrepancy between the information in the video, and that of the Shinmeikai Japanese Accent Dictionary. I spent the morning rewriting, re-recording, and re-editing a section of the lesson in order to fix the issue, but I've since realized that due to the nature of the discrepancy, and moreover, the standard I've tri...

Hope this post finds all of you well. I wanted to share this video to let everyone know how I intend on approaching work now that I'm independent, as well as take this opportunity to solicit advice on productivity.
As mentioned in the video, I anticipate on releasing the next phonetics lesson approximately two days later than normal due to unforeseen pension and health complications—thank you all for your kind understanding in this regard.

May 25, 2021 Supplementary note: At approximately 1:05 in this video, I say "the special sounds always shift the downstep back (to the left) one mora," and this is certainly the standard, mainstream rule, but it seems that there are at least some instances in which they may shift the downstep forward, rather than backwards.
For example, in this lesson I talk about how in スーパー the downstep is on the ス, because the third mora from the end of the word is a ー, so the downstep therefore shifts backwards (to the ...

Good afternoon Patrons!
I have some unfortunate news—three members of my family, myself included, have contracted the flu, and as a result of this I will be delaying the release of Japanese Phonetics #58 by a few days; I've tried to power through sickness in the past, but it's always resulted in both a dip in quality and further delays, so I've opted to take a short break in order to fully recover and properly look over my family. I apologize for this delay, and thank you for your understanding. I'll do my best to upload the lesson a...

Note: In this lesson I translate "買っておくよ (かっておくよ)" as 'I'll buy it for you," but this may not be the best translation in all cases. We could also translate this into, "I'll buy this just in case," or, "I'll buy it, seeing as I (we, you, etc.) might need it," depending on the circumstances.
