You probably should have seen this coming.
Aren't cartoons great? It's easy to dismiss them as wacky children's entertainment, but as a medium, being able to use visual metaphors in this way rules. I'll tell you this: you're not getting a little angel and devil to represent a character's internal moral dilemma in stuff like The Sopranos.
As a storytelling tool, I just think this sort of thing is neat, and we take it for granted.

Yes, I admit we're going to some weird places here.
We can debate all day and all night whether the little angel and devil that appear on a character's shoulder exist as a complete and separate character to the actual original character. So let's!
What's that you say? They don't 'exist'? Well I got news for you buster: neither does Lisa. Is Lisa's conscience, that appears to tell her not to take money from the titular money jar, not worthy of some scrutiny here?

It felt a little wrong going through the main family without covering Abe! But thankfully he arrives pretty early on, more or less fully formed.
There's a joke in "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular" that none of the characters in the shorts look how they're supposed to look, but honestly Abe is largely unchanged. He comes across as a little more aware of things that we're used to in "Grandpa and the Kids" but he's basically the Grandpa we know and love.

Here's a strange one! Recognisable but definitely not a household name. Did you even know his name was Jake? Pretty sure I didn't.
Jake shows up every now and again (how often does a plot require a barber? Not often) but in my opinion features most prominently in "22 Short Films About Springfield", where he attempts to fix Lisa's hair. In "Bart's Haircut" he is actually a lot younger seeming that seems later, but I've chosen to portray him in his more well-known classic appearance. Could he be...a Simpsons character that actually ages?...

Instead of doing my regular paid work, I decided to whip up a couple of promo images for the Patreon Infigured I’d show them to you lovely people before I put them out in the world!
Now we’re getting somewhere.
One of the main things about this project that interested me was delving into these one-off weirdos. Everyone knows Flanders or Hibbert or Moleman or even Hugh Jass but only the nerdiest of nerds are gonna know “Funeral Director”.

I'm not gonna lie: I thought I was gonna have to break a rule to squeeze famously mute Maggie in this week.
As part of the sacred rules, I established that a character needs a line to be included in the official count. And as we all know, Maggie's first words aren't until season 4, episode 10's "Lisa's First Word", voiced by Elizabeth Taylor.

Listen, I'm not gonna tell you Lisa is the main character of The Simpsons. But I do think she represents the often cynical perspective of the show as a whole.

My appreciation for Marge Simpson grows more with every year. She's not big or flashy, but she's such a unique sitcom character that I can't help but be in awe of how she's often used.
