In fun news for me, I discovered a brush that imitates the watercolor brush I used to paint with in OpenCanvas. It makes me happy.

Otherwise, it's been a freaking wacky week. How's everyone else holding up?

Website update and account changes

We've got an update on the chupa website with the new batch of pages, 7-13. I keep telling myself to limit how much background work I do. Although seven pages in a month isn't really that bad, I'd like to get up to 2-3 pages a week, and backgrounds are the biggest drag on that. I think I have an old technique I can use in the next batch - that is, one background/establishing shot per page - so we'll see how well it works for the next ba...

You can tell I'm tweaking Juwo's design as I go. I got the 2-3-ish important elements in there, and am fudging over the embellishments. Haaaah, character design.

Here's the rough for scene 3. I love those boys to death. That monkey can be a real ass, so Blank's there to (attempt to) reel him in. Alcohol only made it worse, though.

It'll look more impressive in the final update, with some proper shading and lighting. I ran out of time today - actually meant to post this *yesterday*, but I was a doof who left my laptop charger at home. I spent the time instead drawing thumbnails (on the office computer, in MS Paint, no less) for 10-07 and 10-08, so it wasn't a total loss.

WIP 190123

Here's the rough for scene 02 of episode one. You can tell where I jumped around with ideas for coloring backgrounds. There was also a glitch with the recorded subtitles, so I had to toss the audio.

The good news is that I have a voice actor lined up for Mizu, one of our protagonists. I'll still be looking out for a handful of people to help voice minor characters like Marshal, here, as well as the characters in the previous scene. Should be fun!

These guys really don't let you get a word in, edgewise.

The set's about 80% built, and I can fill in the rest as I go. The devil will be in the details, but it feels good to have the general size/space of the area laid out.
Maybe this will be the chapter I finally learn how to economize which panels get background details and which don't - which is a little hilarious on a personal level, because that's one of the first lessons I learned while drawing my first webcomic. WIP Wednesday? Yeah, that can be a thing.

One of my first ideas in the script was to make them rat-people, not bats. Grif's phobia kind of sealed the deal with that, though. The *Burmecian* inspiration's still there, though, and I'll play with it a little more as this chapter goes on.

So I backed myself into a corner on page 10-04 by rendering the bat models without materials. I had a good node setup for lines with transparent backgrounds and thought, "It'll be easy. Just color the flats inside the lines." WOW, did that create an...

Today I got a little batty:

After drawing some more concept art, I decided to make a bat model - and rather than making 20-ish colorful models of all shapes for every single extra coming up in this chapter, I just made one blank "doll" to paint over however I need. For the most part, this model will save me a lot of headaches over trying to draw all those bendy lil' wing-fingers.
