Raziel, Scholar of the Infinite - (Prints Available)

Peter Mohrbacher post Raziel, Scholar of the Infinite - (Prints Available) from patreon

Raziel is the keeper of all knowledge and the speaker of truths. This Angel stands at the foot of the Tree of Life and notes all of creation, diligently recording its observations into a great tome. This book contains the answers to everything, even questions you never thought to ask. It is the lens which captures the view from the corner of the Universe’s eye.

There are some things that simply cannot be known. Within that space, Raziel stands alone. An Angel apart from Angels. Keeper of truths never spoken aloud.

Raziel, Scholar of the Infinite - (Detail Phase)

Peter Mohrbacher post Raziel, Scholar of the Infinite - (Detail Phase) from patreon

When I get to this point in the painting process I'm trying to balance two opposing forces.

One one hand, I'm trying protect the colors and textures that have emerged organically from the earlier steps in the process. On the other hand, I'm trying to bully the content that's already there into a refined state. The goal is to do everything that's necessary to complete the painting and avoid all unnecessary work.

Beyond just being a time sink, adding extra detail runs the risk of overwhelming the natural and beautiful things that t...

Peter Mohrbacher post Raziel, Scholar of the Infinite - (Color Phase) from patreon

I had to tidy up some of the more vague bits of the painting before I started on the colors. As I've mentioned with past paintings, my coloring method doesn't really work until there is a certain amount of detail and subtly built into the shading. The goal is to get small hits of opposing colors within small segments of the painting. You can see that happening in this image in Raziel's tunic where a mixture of tans a blues break out of the grey tones. I rely on these colors to emerge naturally from the process and then do my best to shepherd...

Admin Updates

Normally when I'm writing one of these it's to apologize but today I'm happy to say I've got good news. Thanks to the help of my amazing assistant Em, the flood of orders from Angelcon are taking only a few days to get shipped and this month's Legacy Prints are on track to all ship out this week. There are a few outliers, but we're blissfully close to getting caught up over the next couple of days.

Meanwhile, American politics have somehow spilled out into the postal system and it has been causing some delays for packages that are alre...

Peter Mohrbacher post Raziel, Scholar of the Infinite - (Value Phase) from patreon

After struggling to execute on the older version of this drawing I decided that the source of my trouble was trying to hew too close to the original reference material. Once I broke up the space and started to draw from my own inspiration things started to flow much more naturally.

It's easy to get stuck when you want to fulfill expectations. The trick to getting unstuck is to simply let go. Abandoning all assumptions and embracing the reality that everything is permitted has a lot of power. I see echos of this idea in real life, but i...

Peter Mohrbacher post Raziel, Scholar of the Infinite - (concept phase) from patreon

After having successfully revisited Azrael, Angel of Death I got hungry to take another shot another old favorite.

Raziel is an interesting Angel because he's written as having a very casual and aloof attitude in the Angelarium books. I felt it would be nice to see him lounging around trying to look cool.

This version of the painting follows very closely to a classical work that I discovered while searching for reference. Though, as you'll see in later updates, I decided to depart from that reference in later iterations of this p...

Grave of Hope

Peter Mohrbacher post Grave of Hope from patreon

Standing on that high tomb,
the water will lick close.
No safety above, nor below.

We can wait for calmer seas, but know,
When we bury the future,
we live upon the grave of hope.

Grave of Hope - (Color Phase)

Peter Mohrbacher post Grave of Hope - (Color Phase) from patreon

I experimented with a weirder color palette before settling on this one. Everything had been so simple up to this point, I figured it was was worthwhile to see what happened if I mixed it all up. In the end, settling with a bright daylight look was what felt most satisfying.

As the colors came together I noticed there was a little something missing from the composition. After a couple experiments I realized that all this painting needed was a little flame up near the top of the towers. It helped transform them from a statues into a lig...

Peter Mohrbacher post Grave of Hope - (Value Phase) from patreon

It's amazing how much a few squigly marks can accomplish if you know what you want. When I started this piece, I knew exactly what I wanted out of it. That's an asset that makes the process of creating art exceptionally easy.

Grave of Hope - (Concept)

Peter Mohrbacher post Grave of Hope - (Concept) from patreon

I had a different piece planned this month but a couple of weeks ago I decided to toss it on the backburner and start a landscape piece instead. When the urge to draw rocks and waves strikes, I see little reason to ignore it.

For those of you who follow along for art advice, I want to point out how absurdly simple the painting is at this stage. Whenever I mentor artists, I try to stress the importance of how the work begins. Trying to take an unbalanced mess and bring life to it is an incredibly risky way to work. It's much easier ...

Leliel, By the Hidden Sun - (detail phase)

Peter Mohrbacher post Leliel, By the Hidden Sun - (detail phase) from patreon

As I close in on the end of the painting I am starting to feel like I need to place the figure in a scene of some sort. Originally I was considering placing them in an entirely empty void that was defined entirely through texture but I took this detour to see if the painting would be better if I made that texture a little less random. It only took a couple of streaky cloud shapes to convince me this was the way to get back on my bullshit. I love painting crumbly clouds like this.

Leliel, By the Hidden Sun - (color phase)

Peter Mohrbacher post Leliel, By the Hidden Sun - (color phase) from patreon

When I'm keeping the values as isolated as I am in this painting, I need to rely on color temperature to do more heavy lifting for me. Having Leliel's blue skin waver between orange and blue tones do a lot to differentiate between the shadowed and lit areas of the painting without having to make them strictly darker or lighter. This is phenomenon that can be utilized to an even more extreme degree than what I'm showing here. Someday I want to see how far I can push it.

Leliel, By the Hidden Sun - (value phase)

Peter Mohrbacher post Leliel, By the Hidden Sun - (value phase) from patreon

I always like seeing paintings that have a mix of more rendered/sculpted bits with really flat areas. It's something that never comes naturally to me stylistically, but I keep wanting to experiment with it more.

At this stage of the painting, the goal is to get as close as I can to the mixture of sculpted versus flat elements along with creating an outline for which parts of the painting would be light, medium or dark shades.  There's a lot of squinting that goes on at this point. It's often hard to make a final determination whet...

Peter Mohrbacher post Leliel, By the Hidden Sun - (concept phase) from patreon

One of my primary goals when I illustrate an Angel for a second time is to bring something new to the table. For Leliel, I wanted to see if there was a way to take the Angel of the Night outside a nighttime setting. Before I even started on the pose, I knew I wanted a start white background for this piece.

like distant thunder

the sweet caress of the mind washed smooth by sleep

Beautiful Leliel, Angel of Night
you've been away too long

Elusive Shrine - Bonus Painting

Peter Mohrbacher post Elusive Shrine - Bonus Painting from patreon

I started this while I was an on an online hangout with my friends and finished it up on a Twitch stream.

The shrines have been all traditionally painted up until now, so this is the first one that's been done digitally. I'll have to find a spot for them on the website now that there are three of them.

Keep an eye out on the Dropbox for this piece, I'm going to be uploading it this month along with the other rewards.

The plan is to keep this one in black and white, so I didn't know where to break it off and upload a more intermediate step in the work.

Honestly, I don't know what to write right now. I'm safe and the family is doing good but it's a pretty dark time right now and it's getting to me.

Thanks as always for all the support here on this project. I'll be in a more talkative mood sometime soon and I'll bring you some more good art content.

Peter Mohrbacher post Zachriel, The Last Witness - (Value Phase) from patreon

I'm digging deep into the back catalog for the Seraphim this month.

Zachriel is one of the original twelve Angels that were part of Angelarium since the beginning. It's a figure that I've had a lot of feelings about over the years but I haven't done much with. This month I want to create an incarnation for the Angel of Memory that says more about the strange experience of remembrance.
