Currently working on this avocet sketch! The bottom right composition is probably very close to the final piece. My process usually consists of working with a few reference photos and then sketching a silhouette. When I feel like the silhouette itself is strong enough to be identifiable on its own I start adding color.
It turns out avocets are not super involved parents! Their chicks are extremely independent after hatching. Instead of the classic "chicks following parent" I decided to draw an avo parent gesturing their chicks onward ...

The video was shown at a COS board meeting to get a vote on what would become the new logo. I recorded this after 6 months of back-and-forth emails and revisions with no real idea if this work would see the light of day.
Thankfully this very silly video did its job and COS has officially adopted its shiny ne...
