So I'm trying to manage my costs a little better, I've been a lot more careful this month about spending on food, and reduced my groceries to roughly 20-25 dollars a week among other things. Cutting down on snack foods is good for a lot of other reasons anyway. I'm cutting off services I don't need, that I liked trying when I had a fair bit more funds. And I'm maybe being a bit more picky about the extra things I buy like watching movies when they come out...

Bats

I feel like I've stagnatted a bit, and haven't done enough to branch out in a couple ways. Don't get me wrong, I actually think a bunch of my stuff is TECHNICALLY better but in the rush to please or only do pleasing shapes, I haven't really explored real dynamic angles and poses.

I've toyed with it a bit but I'm afraid my limited number of poses I return to again and again has really limited my visual language when it comes to coming up with pages. So when I see a couple really old but REALLY GOOD pages in a comic, I actually end up floor...

I hate to say it but that panel at the top was surprisingly easy to draw. Maybe it's cause I've been in a similar "lie down for a while sad" position recently.

Not including this in the set cause it's just a meme thing based on that one still of a lifeguard from Lilo and Stitch with certain assets enhanced. It's silly, and it's technically a trace. So no including it.

It's working out

I know it's kinda added a fair bit of stress, but I can absolutely see the appeal of just working on a set. You get a fair amount of freedom and autonomy. At the same time, I can't be quite sure how well it'll work out. I suppose we'll see soon enough...

There's something to be said about letting  your hands dictate what you draw. It's obvious, and often times can result in stuff that's more natural and fun and stronger than anything you could've thought of. But there's a real danger in just leaving your brain in the off position especially while designing. You can find yourself not thinking up new things you need to do, or avoiding the same thing you've been doing for years.

It's harder to recycle your own writing, you're pretty familiar with your own vocal thoughts so caching yours...

Buns

Buns are great.

In less great news, I've had a couple shakeups in my near term plans that don't involve art. The April book is still going fine but I'm running late on the next page, and the stuff involving my real world family isn't helping at the moment.

April Sketchbook Still Coming Out

Still having fun with this idea, and gonna make a few good pics out of it too.

I'm considering the format pretty carefully. Since I don't really wanna constrain any one image to certain dimensions I probably can't use a PDF format. Maybe I could make a PDF on the side so I can talk about the pieces and each one has a title. But along with the PDF, you get high resolution versions of each of the images.

I don't quite know whether to watermark them or not though. I usually shy away from watermarks but this might be a necessary thi...

Another Peia Page Preview!

I mentioned earlier about an intentional shift in color. Well here we go from glorious sunset to something that should be a lot colder. It's gonna be tricky managing all the different colors of the characters in that next scene but if it gets across as something a little less "happy" than riding off into the sunset we'll have done our job.

Peia Page Preview

One of the things I'm really impressed by in good animated films are attention to palettes as they relate to the emotional story arcs. You'll find segments of the story where everything is grey but then just revitalized with color as we get to the point where all the heroes are working together. That kind of stuff is really nice.

April for April

On the list of things that may or may not happen, I tossed around the idea of an April themed sketch collection for April. And I may ask a few friends and colleagues whether or not they want in. Largely it should be just for fun, but the goal would be a PDF of semi cheesecake images of 80's April that should be sold fairly cheaply (and free to Patreons)

How to make this deal work is something else though. Maybe it'd be easier if it's a free Zine with a "pay what you want" feature... I dunno.

Anyway, I have an affinity to Psyduck. I don't think I'm alone in that. Psyduck's just this little guy that goes unappreciated for their talents partially due to crippling mental issues but somehow still gets to hang out with the cute redhead. Don't read into it too much, I just think Psyduck's a cool guy.

realistic battle damage

To tell the truth guys, I've been kinda in a weird depression slump this whole month. I feel like I wasted a lot of time and haven't really produced at the quality I was hoping to. Every now and then there's a sketch or so that I like but I haven't been feeling satisfied. Not with the work, the work is objectively pretty good and I like the comics more than well enough.

bat "pinup" sketch (NSFW)

I think I'm actually a bit reluctant to call this a pinup sketch. To me there's some small amount of "sad" that I wanted to get across here which makes it a bit less pure pinup to me. That vaguely discernible rectangle in the background is supposed to be a mirror. And one of the things I remember most about the old batgirl run was that this particular bat had a few issues with her scars.

Adventure April

In an alternate universe, IDW lets me write and draw an Adventure April O'Neil series based on her getting into trouble and getting out of jams and calling the Turtles to take out specific bad guys using information she gathered. And there's precedent in the franchise for that!

This is a rare instance of a preview for the finished page of a page already uploaded. This kind of experience helps me keep sympathy for companies that release games that need post launch patches.

Anyway, in an attempt to save some time (and I think it's working a bit) I'm trying the Overlay color method here. There were a lot of challenges in this page, so keeping the colors to one or two layers is helping move things along. I have to make broader decisions without fiddling too much with erasing or keeping things neat.
